Rubbish away vs muck away, what’s the difference?
-
Description text goes hereRubbish away deals with mixed site waste and general rubbish, rather than spoil from the ground. This typically includes:
Mixed construction and demolition waste
Refurbishment waste and strip‑out waste
Packaging, timber, metals, plastics and light commercial waste
Office and commercial clear‑out rubbish
This type of waste is normally collected in skips, RoRos or on rubbish away vehicles and taken to transfer stations or recycling facilities, where it’s sorted and recovered as far as possible before any residual waste goes to landfill or energy‑from‑waste.
-
Muck away is focused on the heavy, excavated material that comes out of the ground on construction and groundwork projects. This typically includes:
Soils, clays and sub‑soils
Hardcore and excavation arisings
Spoil from foundations, basements and drainage runs
Because this material has come from the ground, it often needs soil analysis to check for contaminants and to classify it as inert, non‑hazardous or hazardous. That classification decides which outlets can accept it, what it costs to tip and what duty of care paperwork you need. Muck away is usually handled by tippers or grabs and goes to specialist soil treatment, recovery or landfill sites.
If you’re not sure, just tell us what’s on the ground and what’s in the skips, and we’ll separate out what should go via muck away and what’s better suited to rubbish away so everything is compliant and cost‑effective.
We’re committed to Sustainability

FAQs
-
Skip hire gives you a container on site that you load yourself. Rubbish away is more of a clearance service – we arrange vehicles or containers to remove pre‑piled or loose waste from site. Often, projects use both: skips/RoRos for day‑to‑day waste and rubbish away for one‑off clearances.
-
Generally no. Rubbish away deals with mixed construction and commercial waste rather than soil, so standard waste transfer and duty of care documentation is usually sufficient. If we suspect soil or contaminated material is mixed in, we’ll flag that and recommend the right route.
-
Yes. Many projects generate both excavated spoil and general site waste. We can set up a simple plan that covers muck away for groundworks and rubbish away (or skips/RoRos) for construction waste, so everything is collected, documented and disposed of correctly.
-
Some hazardous or special wastes (e.g. asbestos, chemicals, pressurised cylinders) need dedicated routes and cannot go in general rubbish away loads. Tell us exactly what you have and we’ll confirm what can go together, what needs separating and what additional arrangements are required.
